Our clients often tell us Erica is “super nice and knowledgeable” and that she “does great work, ” and that same mindset shows up in aftercare too. Your #1 rule for the first week after RF microneedling is simple: protect your skin from heat and sun while it’s healing. Keep it clean, keep it cool, skip makeup and heavy workouts early on, and move back into SPF once the surface is intact.
First 24–48 hours: calm skin, clean hands, zero scrubbing
Right after micro needle RF, your skin tends to look pink to red and feel warm, kind of like a sunburn. That’s expected. What helps most is leaving your skin alone in the best way: gentle cleansing, light moisture, and no friction.
48-hour priority list: Cleanse gently, cool compress if you’re puffy, keep hands off your face, and avoid sweat, heat, and sun exposure.
Do this on day 0–1
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, non-scrubby cleanser. Pat dry. No washcloths, cleansing brushes, or exfoliating pads.
- Cool compress is fine if you feel heat or swelling. Keep it clean and don’t press hard.
- Moisturize for barrier support using a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer. Think comfort, not "active" ingredients.
- Keep workouts light. We generally recommend skipping heavy exercise and anything that makes you sweat for at least 72 hours.
Don’t do this on day 0–1
- No makeup for 24–48 hours. If you’re still noticeably red, keep coverage minimal when you restart.
- No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or hot yoga. Heat tends to keep redness hanging around longer.
- No picking. If you get tiny rough patches, that’s part of healing. Picking raises the risk of pigment changes.
- No direct sun. In Minnesota, that July sun can be stronger than people expect, and sun exposure is the fastest way to undo a good microneedling result.
Days 3–7: the rules that protect tightening and scar work
RF microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries while delivering radiofrequency energy into the dermis. That deeper heat is why clients book it for tightening and microneedling for scars, but it’s also why the first week matters. If you pile on heat, chlorine, or strong actives too soon, irritation and uneven pigment become more likely.
Busy South Bloomington tip: If you’re popping into Mall of America before or after your appointment, keep your plan simple. Clean hands, a hat, water, and a gentle moisturizer. Skip the tempting fragrance testers and anything that rubs on your face.
Sun and sweat are the two biggest troublemakers
We generally recommend avoiding heavy sweating, hot environments, and workouts for at least 72 hours. And for pools, hot tubs, and saunas, plan on at least 72 hours, and often 7–14 days for pools depending on how your skin is healing. Chlorine, heat, and shared water don’t mix well with fresh micro-channels.
Makeup and shaving: ease back in
Once you’re past the first 24–48 hours, you can usually return to makeup if your skin isn’t raw or weeping. Keep it mineral-based and lighter coverage while you’re still pink. Hold off on shaving over the treated area until your skin feels smooth and calm again, because razor friction can spark redness all over again.
Actives to pause (7–14 days) so microneedling looks better, not angrier
This is the part that trips people up. Your skin might feel “fine” by day 3, but that doesn’t mean it’s ready for strong products.
What to pause
Retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, strong vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, and anything “tingling.” We usually recommend 7–14 days off, then reintroduce slowly.
What to focus on instead
A gentle cleanser, a barrier-repair moisturizer, and mineral SPF once the surface has closed. In winter in Bloomington, the dry air can make you feel tighter than usual, so don’t be shy with hydration.
If your skin is still weeping or irritated, we’ll often have you wait a bit longer before SPF or anything beyond basic moisture. Let us know what you’re seeing and we’ll guide you.
When to reach out to our Bloomington team (and what’s usually normal)
A little redness, warmth, mild swelling, and a sandpapery texture as you heal are common in the first few days. What we don’t want you doing is guessing.
"Wow! The importance of choosing a skin clinic that holds patient safety in the highest regard!!"
one of our long-time clients
Reach out sooner if you notice increasing pain (not just tenderness), yellow or green drainage, fever, a rash that spreads, or swelling that keeps getting worse after day 2.
We see clients coming in from Bloomington, Richfield, Minneapolis, Edina, Eagan, and Burnsville, plus travelers heading through MSP. If you’re flying soon, tell us your timeline. In general, flying is often fine after RF microneedling, but dry cabin air can make you feel tighter, so plan for extra hydration and keep your skincare simple.
And if you’re comparing microneedling near me options, this is what we’ll always do: give you clear, understandable guidance and keep your plan realistic. People stick with us for years because they feel looked after, not pushed.
